THE FIRESIDE CHAT

A key aspect of what is missing in our society is the fireside chat.

On canoe trips, after a long adventurous day of paddling, portaging, cooking meals, building fires, and swimming in the lakes, we would gather around the fire and talk about the day. People would share what they experienced—the highlights, the struggles, the moments that scared them, and the moments that inspired them.

In ten years of leading trips, not once did anyone say they had a bad day.

Yes, there were challenges. Sometimes fears were expressed. But those things seemed to dissolve simply by talking about them together around the fire.

And we always talked about the plan for the next day.

This kind of conversation is something most people rarely experience in modern life. My sense is that if eighty percent of people attended a true fireside chat today, many might admit that they didn’t really enjoy their day at work or whatever they spent their time doing. And often they don’t have a very different plan for tomorrow. Many people quietly move through life that way.

A fireside chat is different.

It is a place where we slow down, speak honestly, and begin imagining better tomorrows. It is where we look at where we are and where we might want to go.

One of the best pieces of advice I ever heard about work and happiness was simple:“Whatever you are doing that you don’t like, stop doing it as soon as possible.”

Sometimes it only takes one fireside chat to clearly see where you really are in life.

Sometimes it takes a few to help you get unstuck.

You could say the fireside chat is like that moment on a portage trail where the path splits in two. Do you keep walking down the same trail you’ve been on for years, or do you pause, sit by the fire, and consider a new path?

Sometimes all it takes is a little reflection, a little courage, and a little guidance to discover a trail you never noticed before.

If this idea resonates with you, please do get in touch to arrange a Fireside Chat.

You may be surprised how quickly your life can begin to change when you start exploring new paths.
